Bert’s EMBERS Journey

Bert had a career in the culinary arts for 20 years. After having faced addiction issues, Bert decided he wanted a change and enrolled in the Kinghaven treatment program. It is there that he learned of EMBERS Staffing through the Purpose Project, a skills training and support program. Bert has been with EMBERS Staffing for nearly two years, building his construction experience. His story has been an inspiration to all.

Bert is a valued member of EMBERS Staffing in the Fraser Valley. As EMBERS Staffing’s Fraser Valley General Manager Kate describes:

“There are many things that I can say about Bert, however, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of him is his kindness and his honesty. Bert has a positive outlook on life and he never fails to lend a helping hand. He embraces professionalism and strives daily to be the best that he can be. He is well liked and respected by his colleagues and peers and the Fraser Valley Team is proud to call him “Our Bert”.

We chatted with Bert to learn more about his story and the impact EMBERS has had on him.

How long have you been with EMBERS?

I have been with EMBERS for over a year and a half, close to two years.

What was your situation before EMBERS?

I was in the culinary arts for over 20 years. I always had addiction problems with drugs and alcohol. Near the end, I got divorced and my addiction spiraled and I wasn’t mentally able to work.

Two and a half years ago I decided to give it up and seek treatment. I went to Kinghaven and participated in a support group. During that time, I went to second stage and knew someone who worked at EMBERS who was a friend. I was ready for a change of employment and I went to EMBERS. EMBERS helps a lot of people that are down on their luck. It was scary, I had never done construction in my life. I told Kate straight up that I had no idea about the construction business. At first, she gave me what they could for General Labourer work. I then went through the Ministry at Kinghaven and did the Purpose Project. Through the project, I got a bunch of tickets including telehandler and hoist. I currently work as a Hoist Operator.

How has working with EMBERS impacted you?

It has really boosted my confidence and self-worth. Financially, I’ve paid off all my debts and have been able to purchase a vehicle and pay my bills. I am also living in the EMBERS Sanctuary House and that has given me a lot, too. EMBERS has done a lot for me; a job, a place to stay. It’s done wonders for me. Employment gives me purpose in life. I feel like a human being again.

What has your experience been like so far in the construction industry?

Especially in recovery, you need to give yourself a little nudge. You need to push yourself even just a little. People showed me around and showed me the ropes. The social aspect of construction is amazing, especially on the hoist. You get a misconception of people in construction being tough but they are not. They’re regular people. As long as you show up on time and do the work, people are appreciative.

What does receiving the Teamwork Recognition Award through Marcon mean to you?

I try to keep my head above water and my feet on the ground. It is an achievement and I am really appreciative of Marcon being grateful to me and recognizing that I put a little extra effort in. They’ve been really good to me.

What goals are you looking forward to in the future?

I was talking to a close friend and he was telling me that I need to go on vacation. I am a bit of a workaholic. I am really just saving money. In the long run, I am trying to get enough for a mortgage again.

What advice would you give to someone who is in a similar situation to what you were in previously?

I would tell people not to be afraid. When we start to get out of addiction, we are just afraid and everything is scary. And to trust mankind. There are great people out there. There’s more kindness than hate. One hand reaches out to the next. Fight for what you’re worth. It’s a beautiful world.

Thank you, Bert, for sharing your story! It’s truly an honour to play a role in someone’s employment journey, witnessing their growth and success along the way.
