Meet Tereas! Bringing Hard Work and Positivity to Chandos’ Northwestern Polytechnic Site

When Tereas saw a job posting from EMBERS, she wasn’t sure what to expect. After a year without work and living “in the middle of nowhere,” she was feeling stuck. Sending out over 50 resumes and applications had led to nothing, and without a vehicle, many opportunities seemed out of reach. But EMBERS changed that. She reached out to us after seeing a job posting for General Labourers, and despite being intimidated by the role, she went for it. 

Now, she’s part of the team at Chandos’ Northwestern Polytechnic site in Grand Prairie, keeping the construction site clean for workers. Her daily tasks include shoveling and salting walkways, maintaining air machines and filters, vacuuming high-traffic areas, and ensuring garbage and dusting are kept under control. It’s a job that keeps her busy, and she takes pride in knowing that people appreciate her work.

Tereas feels lucky to enjoy both the work and the people, which isn’t always the case. “I like who I work with. I don’t have any problems with anybody,” she laughed. And though she’s currently the only woman on the site, she’s found nothing but respect and support from her colleagues — despite what one might expect from a male-dominated field.

Before EMBERS, Tereas had years of experience in the construction industry, from sheet metal work to residential installations. But after her last company went bankrupt, she lost the spark for the trade. Housekeeping and maintenance gave her a fresh start, and now, she’s thriving in her role on the Chandos site.

Looking to the future, Tereas says she’s happy right where she is. She lives day by day, maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of humour that brightens the workplace. “People love my wit,” she says with a smile. She literally brings the sunshine to the northern site everyday.

Her advice for others looking for work? “Stay positive—even though it’s easier said than done.” And when it comes to EMBERS, she can’t recommend the organization enough. “Rifat and the team helped me out big time. I thought EMBERS was just the bigger bosses, but they’re actually a staffing agency that truly cares.”
